How to Spring Clean Your Friendships (And Your Home, Too)

We are halfway through this challenge. I loved your honesty with regards to our family task from yesterday. It’s wonderful when we can embrace the challenges of change together.

I have been blessed with some amazing friendships over the years. Like any relationship, though, friendships often have their highs and lows, and I’ve witnessed plenty of both. Today our challenge involves taking a deeper look at the relationships we have, how we invest in them, and whether we need to make changes. Friendships are a very important part of our lives, so I urge you not to rush through this.

Friendship Spring Cleaning Tasks

Task 1

Any good friendship requires give and take by both parties. Ideally, both sides of the relationship are investing in one another by scheduling time together. Often, we get caught up in our busy lives and neglect those connections, or put off a friend for an unspecified later date. A healthy friendship, though, like any healthy relationship, requires quality time. Consider the close friendships that you have. Schedule some quality time (coffee, dinner, a phone conversation, Skype date…) with at least one friend you haven’t made time for lately.

Task 2

Is there a friend that you need to make amends with, either by apologizing or offering forgiveness? Take the time to offer the necessary apology or forgiveness today.

Task 3

Is there a person in your life that obviously needs a friend? If so, how could you reach out to him or her and offer your friendship today? Note: coming right out and saying, “You need a friend and I’m here to be it!” isn’t probably the best way to go about it. Start by inviting them to coffee, offering to watch their little one so they can have a moment of personal time, or even just strike up a conversation.

Today’s Assignment

After carefully considering today’s tasks, leave your answer to the following question in the comments below.

QUESTION: We all have a friend (maybe more than one!) that brings sunshine to the dark parts of our lives. What is one thing every good friend of yours needs to have? Feel free to tag those in your life that represent true, always-there-for-you friends.
