How to Spring Clean Your Marriage (And Your Home, Too!)

It’s the perfect day to talk about how to spring clean your marriage.

Justin and I have been married for 18 years this summer. We’ve been through our share of ups and downs, but he’s still my favorite person in the whole world. I love hanging out with him, even if it means simply sitting on the couch together watching television, and I miss him when he’s not around. Like any other area of our life, we can get stuck in a rut when it comes to our marriage, forgetting that we need to take the time to make each other feel special. Today is all about making your spouse feel special.

If you are currently single, that’s okay: consider making someone else in your life feel special today. Perhaps a sibling, a good friend, or a parent?

Marriage Spring Cleaning Tasks

Task 1

If you don’t already have a date night planned this month, put one on the calendar. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive, but it needs to be a couple of hours set aside for you and your spouse to spend time together. While you are at it, contemplate putting a date night on the schedule at least once a month. You won’t regret it!

Task 2

Make a list of four to five nice things you can do for your spouse over the next week. (Consider things that your spouse would think to be nice, not your own preferences.) Perhaps your husband has been begging to have pizza for the past couple of weeks? Or maybe your wife loves it when you bring home flowers? Find something that your spouse will love, and surprise them this week.

Task 3

Say thank you. Often in marriage, we begin to expect that our spouse just takes care of routine tasks, whether that be in house cleaning, with our children, or the income they bring home each month. Find times this week to say thank you to your spouse for all of the little things they do.

Task 4

(Optional) Give your honey a little shout out on social media today. Post a cute picture of the two of you and let them know you are thinking about them. If nothing else, it will probably bring a smile to their face! Use #lemonblessings in the comment so the rest of us can see and smile along with you!

QUESTION: What is the one thing your spouse does that always makes you smile?

Today’s Cleaning Tasks: Office Areas

If you are participating in the household cleaning part of this challenge, the tasks are below and you can find a printable version here.

Office Cleaning Tasks:

  • Remove all items from bookshelves and wipe down each shelf
  • Determine if all items are necessary and donate anything you haven’t used in a year
  • Replace all additional items
  • Clear desk drawers and reorganize. Go through any papers that aren’t filed properly and file them now. Contemplate using a scanner to upload all of your files to a program like Dropbox or Google Drive so you can go paper free.
  • Wipe down windowsills and baseboards
  • Wipe down any furniture, including legs and drawers
  • Remove any items from bulletin boards that are no longer relevant
  • Floors mopped or vacuumed

I’m so glad you’ve made it this far in the challenge. I’m sure that if I was able to personally talk to each and every one of you, I’d hear stories of great change taking place in your hearts, minds, and lives this week. That’s my prayer anyway.
