How to Strengthen Family Bonds

Well hey there and welcome back to another episode of the Financial Fix Up Podcast! I’m your host, Sarah Brumley, and today we’re diving into day 4 of our Community Building Challenge—which I hope you’re recognizing as a step-by-step guide to building intentional relationships in ways that feel practical and meaningful.

So far, we’ve talked about defining your circles of community, identifying gaps, and making the first move to connect with others. If you’ve been following along, I hope you’ve already started to see the impact of these small, intentional actions. And if you’re just joining us, no worries! You can always go back and catch up—it’s never too late to start.

Today, we’re turning the spotlight on family connection time. Because building community isn’t just about you—it’s about bringing your family into the process. By creating shared experiences, you not only strengthen your community but also deepen the bonds within your household. And the best part? It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

By the end of this episode, my hope is that you’ll have simple ideas that will help engage your family in meaningful ways and reflect on how these activities can make a difference.

Step #1: Choose a Family Activity

The first step is to choose a family activity that fosters this idea of community. Of course you’ll want to think about what feels realistic for your family’s schedule and energy levels this week, but here’s a few ideas you might consider:

  • Attend a Free Local Event: Look for things like a library storytime, a farmers’ market, or a community movie night. These events are usually casual, family-friendly, and offer plenty of opportunities to meet new people.
  • Volunteer as a Family: This could be as simple as cleaning up a local park, donating items to a food drive, or helping out at a community event. Volunteering is a great way to teach kids the importance of giving back while connecting with others.
  • Host a Casual Gathering: Keep it low-key—invite neighbors over for coffee, plan a backyard playdate for the kids, or organize a potluck. The goal isn’t to impress—it’s to create a space for connection.

Pick an activity that feels fun and meaningful for your family. The point isn’t what you do—it’s that you’re doing it together and creating space for interaction.

Step #2: Reflect on the Experience

Once you’ve actually completed whatever activity you chose, take a few moments to reflect together as a family. Ask questions like:

  • How did this activity help us connect with others?
  • What did we enjoy most about it?
  • Is there something we’d like to do differently next time?

This act of reflection might seem silly, but it really does help when it comes to recognizing the value of the experiences you have AND it’ll allow everyone in your family a chance to share their perspectives, too. You might be surprised by what your kids noticed or enjoyed the most—it could be something as simple as they loved making a new friend or they can’t wait for the next time they get to help someone in need.

Step #3: Keep it Simple and Budget-Friendly

Now, I do know that there are times when life feels overwhelming and the idea of planning one more thing might feel like way too much. And that’s exactly why this step is all about simplicity. Use what you already have at home or look for free activities in your area.

Here are a few ideas:

  • If your family loves to play board games, pull the ones you have from the closet and invite a few people over to join you. Maybe everyone could bring a bag of their favorite chips and some salsa to share?
  • If you’re an artistic family, maybe consider hosting a casual craft day for neighborhood kids—think painting, coloring, or DIY projects.
  • Check your local community calendar for free events like outdoor concerts, park meetups, or seasonal festivals.

Remember, the goal isn’t to do something elaborate—it’s to create a moment of connection that fits naturally into your life.

Step 4: Encouragement for Busy Families

If your week feels packed and you can’t commit to a big activity, that’s okay. Even small efforts—like saying hello to a neighbor or chatting with someone at a local event—can make a difference. The key is to do what works for you. Start where you are, with the time and resources you have, and know that even small steps can build community.

How Will You Strengthen Family Bonds?

And there you have it – day four of the Get Connected Challenge is in the bag.

Your action step for today or this week is to:

  1. Choose a family activity that fosters community—whether it’s attending a local event, volunteering, or hosting a casual gathering.
  2. Reflect afterward as a family on how the experience helped you connect.
  3. Keep it simple and budget-friendly—use what you have or find free options in your area.

By the end of this, I just know you’ll have created meaningful memories and strengthened your family’s bond while BONUS connecting with those around you.

I’d love to hear how this activity worked for your family! Send me an email at sarah@lemonblessings.com to share your experience, reflections, or even your family’s favorite part of the activity. And if this episode inspired you, consider sharing it with another family who might need this type of encouragement.

Tomorrow we’re tying all together by exploring how to make these new or strengthened relationships part of your everyday life without feeling overwhelmed or destroying your finances along the way. You won’t want to miss it!

Whatever you decide, though, just know that I’m cheering you on! You’ve got this! Have an amazing day and I’ll chat with you again next time!
