5 Ways to Embrace Weight Loss on a Budget

Well hey there and welcome back to another episode of the Financial Fix Up Podcast. I’m your host, Sarah Brumley and today we’re diving into the topic of how to embraec weight loss without breaking the bank. Trust me, I know that those trendy diet plans and gym memberships can be super expensive, but the good news is you don’t need to spend a fortune to take care of your health. That’s why today I’m offering you five tips and a bit of a challenge to help you keep your health journey budget-friendly. Sound like a plan? Well then let’s just jump right in.

1. Cook Like a Frugal Foodie

You’ve heard it before: abs are made in the kitchen. What they don’t tell you? That kitchen doesn’t need a Michelin-star budget. By cooking at home and focusing on simple, whole foods, you can eat healthier and save big. Affordable staples like rice, beans, oats, and seasonal veggies are your best friends when it comes to frugal eating.

Quick tip: Batch cooking can be a lifesaver. There’s a couple of ways you can do this. Some folks like to spend one afternoon whipping up meals for the entire week. Personally, that’s a little overkill for me, but I love to cook a double or triple batch of recipes that are easy to freeze so that we have a couple additional meals throughout the month – especially for nights when we might be tempted to eat out just because we don’t want to cook. Stir fry, chili, and soups are all great options for this.

Challenge: Try creating a meal plan this week that includes one or two batched cooked meals. Use the things you have already in your freezer, fridge and pantry – try a new recipe if you need to, and just see how it goes. Trust me, it’s possible, and you’ll feel so accomplished when you see how much you’re saving!

2. Ditch the Gym, Find Your Playground

Next, let’s talk about fitness. Gym memberships are great, but they’re not always budget-friendly. The good news? The world can be your gym. So, whether it’s walking, jogging, or biking outdoors, you can stay active without having to spend a lot of money.

Some of my favorites include:

Turning the living room into a dance party zone with the kids. Not only is it a great workout, but it’s also a fun way to bond as a family.

Or try a free YouTube workout—there are endless options, from yoga to strength training or even indoor walking workouts. I actually have a yoga workout that I love, so I’ll link to her information in the show notes if you want to check it out.

Another thing we did recently was we got a trampoline park membership – it’s $20 per month so from my perspective it was super affordable and the best part is that I can jump for free if one of my kids is jumping. Not only has that made it valuable together time for us, but I get a little workout in while they do. That’s a win win in my book!

3. Grocery Shopping: Master the Budget Ninja Moves

My third tip is all about shopping smart. Grocery stores can be budget traps, especially with all those shiny, pre-packaged ‘health foods’ screaming your name. But the secret is that while they might seem convenient, you don’t need them. Instead, shop the perimeter of the store where the fresh foods live. Look for sales, buy in bulk, and choose frozen or canned veggies if fresh isn’t in the budget.

Fun comparison: Just to put this into perspective, a $7 bag of kale chips might last one snack session, but $7 of carrots, rice, and beans can feed a family for days. So definitely don’t let the marketing fool you!

4. Hydration Station: Say Goodbye to Overpriced Beverages

Moving on to hydration! Staying hydrated is a key part of any health journey, but you don’t need fancy protein shakes or diet drinks to do it. Water is the original energy drink, my friends, and it’s practically free! You might consider jazzing up your water with fruit or herbs. Think lemon, cucumber, strawberries, or even a sprig of mint. Not only will it taste amazing, but it’ll also make you feel fancy without spending a dime! Bonus points if you drink that fancy water out of a fancy glass!

Make Change Exciting: Start Small, Celebrate Big

Last but not least, remember that small, sustainable changes are the key to long-term success. You don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight. Start with one habit, like adding a vegetable to each meal or swapping soda for water. The same goes for exercise. Start small. Maybe you stretch each morning for 10 minutes or go on a fifteen minute walk on your break. Once that feels easy, add another.

Think of this as a snowball effect. Each small win builds momentum, and before you know it, you’re reaching your goals without feeling deprived. And don’t forget to celebrate your wins—whether it’s fitting into those old jeans or simply feeling more energetic.

How Will You Embrace Weight Loss on a Diet?

So there you have it—five ways to embrace weight loss on a budget: cook at home, ditch the gym, shop smart, stay hydrated, and focus on small, sustainable changes. Remember, you don’t need a lot of money to prioritize your health. What matters most is consistency and creativity.
