How to Spring Clean Your Spiritual Life (And Your Home, Too)

It’s the final day of the Spring Cleaning Challenge and we’re focusing on how to spring clean your spiritual life! You’ve accomplished six days of reflection in your family, personal, and home life, and I hope and pray that you are seeing great results come from all the changes you’ve determined to make. Taking the time to Spring Clean our lives isn’t an easy task, but you’ve made to the end and that’s cause for celebration. I hope your home is looking a little cleaner as well. I know mine is!

Spring Clean Your Spiritual Life

Today, I’d like to talk about Spring Cleaning our spiritual lives. I’m going to keep it short and sweet, asking you a few questions, and providing you with Scriptural references to go along with them. Like any other day of this challenge, you’ll find tasks to complete below, as well as a question to answer on your choice of social media.

It’s hard to pick the areas that are most important when it comes to our spiritual Spring Cleaning. I really struggled with this, but was able to come up with four areas of our spiritual lives that should be address and “cleaned”.

Sin

Is there sin in your life that’s hasn’t been confessed? This could include anger (James 1:19-20), gossip (Psalm 64:2-4), pride (Psalm 10:4), lack of forgiveness (Mark 11:25-26), and so many others not listed here. When we hold onto that sin, it eats away at us, causing friction in our lives and resulting in misery. Confess that sin today and ask for forgiveness.

Forgiveness

We’ve all been there, in the throes of pain and devastation because of something someone else did or said. Hanging on to that hurt doesn’t make it better, though. Is there someone you need to offer forgiveness to today? Perhaps that forgiveness will come with reconciliation in your relationship, and maybe it won’t, but forgive for you, not for them, and you will find your heart will be lighter.

Accountability

It’s hard to stay on the straight and narrow path all alone. Satan is always looking for lone sheep to whisk away to his own purposes, and when you find yourself in that lonely place you are susceptible to his attacks. The best way to avoid that: meet regularly with a group of believers that can hold you up and keep you accountable for your actions. This goes beyond heading to church each Sunday morning and singing in an auditorium with hundreds of people you don’t know. Having a group of people that keep you accountable means building relationship with those people, through Biblical study and discussion.

Personal Study Time

It’s easy to tick off all of the boxes: attends church, check, has an accountability group, check, feeds the homeless, check, and yet, we often neglect the most important area of our Spiritual lives: personal time reading and studying God’s word. It’s easy to get busy and put it on the back burner, but it’s one of the most important things we can do because it’s while reading God’s word that we learn his plans for us, his motives, his heart. It’s also where we find conviction in our plans, motives, and heart. Are you reading, studying, and reflecting on God’s word daily?

Miscellaneous Spring Cleaning Tasks

Task 1

Offer an apology or forgiveness if necessary.

Task 2

If you aren’t already meeting with a group of believers, find a way to do so. Ask around at your church for Bible study groups or accountability groups, find a moms (or dads) group, or ask a few friends to join together with you on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to lift one another up and hold each other accountable.

Task 3

If you haven’t already, schedule time into each day to read, study, and reflect on God’s word. Find a devotional to get you started – any time is better than no time at all. I recommend this one, but there are so many more out there that are great options as well.
